FolQ

A periodical to promote Creative Folkestone, it's businesses and makers

Collaborating with fashion creative director Zoe Holborough from Tallulaha & Hope, photographer Igor Emmerich and a whole host of wonderful creative people, alongside Creative Folkestone (formally the Creative Foundation) on the first three issues of FolQ.
Folkestone's lively Creative Quarter has grown from a slew of empty galleries, artists studios, shops, and eateries to a full, ever evolving and exciting area of this quaint seaside town. To celebrate this and create little snapshots of the makers, artists and experiences available in this wonderfully vibrant area, we were tasked with creating a limited edition paper to both promote the Quarter to residents and potential visitors to the town.

Collaboration

This was a collaborative project, so our task was to create the brand for it all to sit under, art direct some of the photo shoots, while working with Zoe to help commission some of the creatives, not to mention design the paper, prepare it for print and create an online version! A huge undertaking and a real labour of love.

The brand

The working title for this project was Folkestone Bazaar, a play on the the idea of a periodical. We felt strongly that this wasn't quite edgy enough and though encompasses all of Folkestone, doesn't dial it down towards the creative quarter, or give a window to all the artists and creatives who lent their time. After a lot of brainstorming and throwing around ideas, we came up with the idea of FolQ, a combination of Folkestone, the (Creative) Quarter, while also trying to nod to the 'folks' who make it all happen in and around this area of the town.
